PHSE & RHE

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is an important part of the teaching at Hillborough Infant and Nursery School. We provide our children with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to manage their lives now and in the future. Within our school we teach PSHE through whole school and class assemblies, discussions during fruit and milk time, and inclusion of PSHE lessons through our Topic lessons. Opportunities for development of PSHE are also planned for in other subjects across the curriculum, with links to the current topic in the school.  Through our WOW events and performances we also provide children with the opportunity to develop their confidence and work collaboratively as part of a team.

We have adopted the Jigsaw Mindful approach to PSHE as a planning and resources tool for our school.  Jigsaw covers all areas of PSHE for the Nursery through to Year Two, including statutory Relationships and Health Education and with strong links to British Values and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development (SMSC). Jigsaw is taught as a “puzzle” unit within each whole school topic. Each "puzzle piece" demonstrates the connections between ideas and builds to a "bigger picture" as children learn more and develop. The table below gives the learning theme of each of the six Puzzles (units) and these are taught across the school; the learning deepens and broadens every year from Nursery to Year Two.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) is a prime area within EYFS. At Hillborough Infant and Nursery School, children will be supported to form positive relationships with their peers and develop respect for others. We support children to manage their feelings and understand that some behaviour is unacceptable. The children develop a positive sense of themselves and have confidence in their own abilities.

At Hillborough Infant and Nursery School, children who have been identified as having social, emotional and behavioural difficulties and through consultation with their parents or carers, are supported with additional interventions such as Drawing and Talking, Thrive or Nurture Group.
